Engineered environments

Microorganisms play important, but as yet poorly defined, roles in engineered environments. Here, their activities give rise to both challenges and opportunities. Our research creates new microbiological and (geo)chemical knowledge that can be used to address challenges, improve process performance, and minimize environmental impact. We also take inspiration from the natural environment to innovate new biotechnologies. We are actively involved with the private sector and work directly with commercial partners to valorize scientific insight in the mineral, oil and gas, and waste management sectors.
